Reconstruction of the Time-spatial Distribution of Korean Mammals using Records of Joseon Dynasty Documents

조선 시대 고문헌을 활용한 한반도 포유동물의 시･공간적 분포 복원

Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct the spatio-temporal distributions of mammals using the records of mammal-related tributes and offerings in the historical documents-Sejongsilokjiriji (1454), Shinjeungdonggukyeojisuengram (1530), and Daedongjiji (1861-1866). We identified total 24 mammals in the documents. 8 out of 24 mammals were commonly recorded in all three documents. We used 6 mammals for analyzing the time-spatial changes in their distributions during the Joseon dynasty. The results showed that their records of counties decreased from the early to the late Joseon and were confined in a few areas along with mountain range of Beakdudaegan, Jungmaek, and the diversity of mammals per a county also decreased in the late Joseon. Population increase related disturbances from the early to the late Joseon could explain the declines of mammal-related tributes records and diversity of mammals. The population increase caused the development of villages and cities, expanding agricultural land, and forest destruction, which led the habitat losses of mammals. The historical documents clearly have a limitation on reconstructing the mammal distributions due to inconsistency in the recording principles, which changed from the early to the late Joseon. However, considering the lack of ecological knowledge on the mammals in ROK, our results would provide the fundamental information on the further mammal studies.

본 연구는 세종실록지리지(1454), 신증동국여지승람(1530), 대동지지(1861-1866)에 나온 포유동물 관련 공물 등의 기록으로 당시 포유동물의 분포를 복원하고 그 패턴을 분석하였다. 기록된 조선 시대 포유동물은 쥐목, 식육목, 우제목 등으로 총 24종류였다. 조선 초기에서 후기로 갈수록 포유동물의 종류와 군현의 기록 수는 감소하였다. 24종류의 포유동물 중 모든 문헌에 공통으로 기록된 6종류를 대상으로 분포 변화를 분석한 결과, 조선 후기로 갈수록 포유동물의 공물 기록이 나오는 군현은 백두대간 및 정맥을 따라 일부 지역으로 제한되거나 한반도 북부 지역에 축소되었으며, 다양도 또한 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 감소의 원인은 인구 증가에 따른 도시형성과 농경지 확대로 인한 산림 감소 등 포유동물 서식지에 대한 인간 교란의 증가로 추정된다. 작성 원칙의 변화 등과 같은 불확실성 때문에 공물 기록만으로 분포를 복원하는 것은 한계가 있으나 이를 대체할 수 있는 자료가 부족한 상황에서 본 연구의 결과는 포유동물의 서식지 관리 및 보전을 위한 중요한 기초자료를 제공한다.
