Comparative Analysis of Movement Patterns between Tourists and Residents using Big Data

Abstract

With the recent emergence of social issues related to regional development, the effectiveness of traditional development approaches based on regional land use is being questioned. These issues highlight the limitations of responding only to temporary development demands, failing to reflect the long-term and evolving needs of the region. Consequently, there is a growing demand for flexible regional development and management strategies that can dynamically respond to the diverse needs of newly emerging spaces. This study aims to identify the spatial needs of key stakeholders - tourists and residents - by comparing their spatial usage patterns in Jeju island. Utilizing navigation data, we estimated distance decay functions for both groups to measure changes in travel frequency relative to distance. Additionally, a network analysis was conducted to further examine the spatial utilization of both groups. The findings revealed that tourists are more sensitive to travel distances to tourism resources such as tourist attractions, dining and shopping facilities. Notably, tourists tend to consider a broader spatial range in their movements compared to residents. Based on degree and betweenness centrality, further indicated that despite having similar travel purposes, tourists and residents often choose different destinations. These findings underscore the need for flexible regional strategies that account for the distinct mobility patterns of tourists and residents, providing valuable insights for future development and planning.

최근 지역개발과 관련된 다양한 사회적 문제가 발생함에 따라 전통적인 지역 용도에 따른 개발 방식의 실효성이 모호해지고 있다. 이러한 문제는 지역에 대한 한시적인 개발수요에 대응할 뿐, 장기적으로 변화하는 지역에 대한 수요를 반영하지 못한다는 한계를 가진다. 따라서 새롭게 생겨나는 공간에 대한 다양한 수요를 유동적으로 반영할 수 있는 유연한 지역 개발 및 관리 전략에 대한 요구가 증대되고 있다. 이에 따라, 이 연구는 제주도를 배경으로 지역을 공유하는 주요 행위자인 관광객과 지역주민의 수요를 파악하고, 그들의 공간 활용 패턴을 비교 분석하였다. 이를 위해 내비게이션 데이터를 활용하여 두 그룹의 이동 거리에 따른 이동 빈도의 변화를 측정할 수 있는 거리 조락 함수를 5가지 분포 형태로 추정하였다. 또한, 관광객과 지역주민의 공간 활용을 더욱 정밀하게 분석하기 위해 네트워크 분석을 수행하였다. 연구 결과, 식음시설, 관광매력물, 쇼핑시설과 같은 주요 관광자원에서 관광객은 이동 거리에 대해 더욱 민감하게 반응하였다. 특히, 관광객은 이동 시에 지역 주민보다 더 많은 공간을 고려하는 경향을 보였다. 특히, 네트워크 분석을 통해 연결정도 중심성과 사이중심성을 기준으로 두 주체의 모빌리티 네트워크를 비교한 결과, 동일한 목적의 이동이라 할지라도 관광객과 지역주민은 서로 다른 목적지를 선택하는 경향이 확인되었다. 이는 관광객과 지역주민 간의 이동 패턴과 공간 활용이 명확히 구별됨을 시사하며, 지역 개발 및 관리 전략 수립 시 이러한 차별적인 특성을 고려해야 함을 강조한다. 이 연구는 실시간으로 수집된 실증 데이터를 바탕으로, 지역의 복합적 용도를 고려한 유연한 개발 전략을 마련하는 데 기초 자료를 제공하며, 향후 지역 개발 및 관리 전략 수립에 있어 중요한 시사점을 제시한다.
