Changing Geographical Imaginations of the Polar Regions: From Terra Incognita to the Frontiers of the Anthropocene

Abstract

The Arctic and Antarctic have received little attention in the Korean scholarship of human geography. By combining the concept of ‘imagined geographies’ with recent discussions of the Anthropocene, this paper explores the changing geographical imaginations of the polar regions. The aim of this paper is three-fold. First, it identifies and discusses four prominent polar imaginations by examining the ways in which nation states have territorialized the polar regions through various political, economic, and scientific interventions over the past 150 years. These imaginations include viewing the polar regions as: ‘terra incognita’ ‘polar conquest’ ‘Cold War frontier’, and ‘the common heritage of mankind’. Second, it examines Korean-specific imaginations of the polar regions, including ‘the treasury of natural resources’ ‘entry to an advanced country’ and ‘another Korea in Antarctica’. Third, the paper examines an emerging polar imagination, which considers the polar regions as ‘the frontiers of the Anthropocene’, where the planetary climate crisis is experienced and can be monitored. This particular imagination fosters increased scientific research on global environmental change and enhanced international environmental cooperation. This paper argues that polar imaginations are socio-material achievement shaped not just by the changing political, economic, and cultural interventions - such as colonial expansion, Cold War politics, and the state-led developmentalism - but by the materiality of the planet as well.

극지는 한국 인문지리학의 발길이 거의 닿지 않은 공간이다. 이 논문은 문화지리학의 심상 연구와 인류세 연구의 행성성 논의를 결합해 남북극 극지에 대한 지리적 심상의 형성과 변화를 살펴본다. 논문은 먼저 서구와 한국의 극지 영역화 방식의 변화를 각각 살펴보고, 이 과정에서 생산·동원되는 극지 심상을 논의한다. 이어 기후 위기로 대표되는 최근의 인류세 맥락 속에서 새롭게 등장한 극지 심상을 살펴보고, 생태적·정치적 의미를 탐색한다. 지난 150년 동안 극지는 ‘미지의 땅’에서 과학 기술을 통한 ‘정복 대상’으로, 이어 미소 냉전의 ‘전략적 대치지역’에서 ‘인류 공동의 땅’으로 이해되고 상상되어 왔다. 국내에서는 1970년대 ‘자원의 보고’로 극지에 관한 관심이 촉발됐으며, ‘선진국 진입의 증거’이자 한국과 지질학적 유사성을 지닌 ‘또 하나의 한국’으로 상상되어 왔다. 이러한 극지 심상은 식민주의적 팽창, 냉전적 대결, 발전주의 산업화와 같은 역사적 맥락 속에서 형성되어 왔다. 2000년대 이후에는 기후 위기 논의 속에서 극지가 ‘인류세 프런티어’로 새롭게 사유 되면서, 초국가적 과학 조사와 국제 환경 협력이라는 새로운 극지 이용 방식을 불러왔다. 이 논문은 주요 극지 심상을 유형화함으로써 극지에 대한 지리적 지식을 생산하고, 행성적 스케일과 행위성을 강조하는 인류세의 행성성 논의를 심상지리 분석에 결합해 심상지리 연구 발전에 기여한다.
