Spatial Statistical Analysis on the Degrees of Concentration and Isolation in Residential Distribution of Foreign Workers in the Seoul Metropolitan Area: Agglomeration by Nationality or Socioeconomic Status?

Abstract

This study examines the characteristics of the residential distribution of foreign workers in the Seoul metropolitan area by different groups. More specifically, this study attempts to investigate which of the two influences (agglomerations by nationality and socioeconomic status) is stronger in their spatial distribution patterns. For the analysis, 25 groups by nationality, and high-income professional and low-income non-professional worker groups by visa status are classified, and the distribution characteristics of concentration and isolation are examined. Then, a comparison is made between nationality groups and socioeconomic status groups. The coefficient of variation and the index of dissimilarity are used for aspatial analysis on a micro spatial scale, and Moran’s I is used for spatial analysis on a macro spatial scale. The analysis is conducted on 66 cities and counties in Seoul metropolitan area. The result of the study shows that different nationality and socioeconomic status groups have various levels of concentration and isolation at different spatial scales. As a result of the comparison between the agglomeration patterns of the nationality and the socioeconomic status, it is confirmed that the two do not show significant difference in concentration level while the latter is stronger in isolation. Meanwhile, nationality type (developed and underdeveloped countries) and socioeconomic status (high-income professionals and low-income non-professionals) are closely associated with each other in the degrees of concentration and isolation. The results of this study can be used as basic data necessary for establishing future policies related to foreign residential areas.

이 연구는 서울 대도시권의 외국인 노동자들을 대상으로 이들의 거주 분포가 어떤 특성을 보이는지를 집단별로 살펴보았다. 보다 구체적으로, 이 연구는 국적 집단별 집적의 양상과 사회경제적 지위에 따른 집단별 집적의 양상 특성을 살펴보고 이 중 어떤 유형의 집적이 공간상의 분포에서 더 강하게 드러나는지를 확인해 보고자 하였다. 분석을 위해 25개 국적 집단과 체류자격에 따른 고소득 전문직과 저소득 단순 노무직 집단을 구분하고 각 집단의 집중도와 분리도 분포 특성을 고찰한 후, 국적별 집단과 사회경제적 지위별 집단 간의 비교를 수행하였다. 미시적 공간 규모의 몰공간적 분석에는 분산계수와 상이지수가, 그리고 광역적 공간 규모의 공간적 분석에는 모란지수가 이용되었으며, 분석은 서울 대도시권의 66개 시군구를 대상으로 수행되었다. 연구 결과, 국적 및 사회경제적 지위 집단은 집단별로 서로 다른 공간적 규모에서 다양한 수준의 집중도와 분리도를 나타내고 있었다. 국적에 따른 집적 양상과 사회경제적 지위에 따른 집적 양상 간의 비교 결과, 집중도에서는 양자 사이에 큰 차이가 없었고 분리도에서는 사회경제적 지위가 집적 양상에서 더 두드러진 것으로 확인되었다. 한편, 집중도와 분리도 모두에서 국적 유형(선진국, 저개발국)과 사회경제적 지위(고소득 전문직, 저소득 단순 노무직)는 상호 연관성이 높게 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 향후 외국인 거주지 관련 정책 수립에 필요한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있다.
