A Geographical Study on the Limitations of Campus Student Counselling Centers as Alternative Therapeutic Spaces for Promoting Mental Health : From a Perspective of Counsellors

정신건강증진을 위한 대안적 치유공간으로서의 대학 내 학생상담센터의 한계성에 관한 지리학적 연구 : 상담전문가 관점을 중심으로

Abstract

This research aims to look at what practical limitations campus student counselling centers as alternative therapeutic spaces for promoting mental health have from a geographical perspective. First, even though campus student counselling centers assume the characteristic of autonomy unlike elementary, middle, and high school under the control of public power, it is considerably influenced by the reterritorialization of power such as the evaluation of the Ministry of Education, the interest of university board members and the attitude of campus student counselling centers’ participants, etc. In this sense, the reversion to an original function of campus student counselling centers depends on the guarantee of independence. Second, it turns out that there are inevitable cracks in terms of control and management with regard to the change of choice and responsibility from the solidarity with protectors (as a side approach) to full individual (each student) right (as a point approach); accordingly, proper complements (particularly, securing of clients’ dignity) are required. Third, the full individual right of clients brought about loose liaisons with external organizations such as protectors or formal carers, for example, special counselling centers and insane asylums. Hence, making close relationships between formal carers and informal ones, which can extensively cover the life zone (community-based services) of clients for promoting effective mental health care, is demanded.

본 연구는 지리학적 관점에서 대학 내 학생상담센터가 정신건강증진을 위한 대안적 치유공간으로서 어떠한 현실적 한계성을 가지고 있는지 상담전문가 대상 심층인터뷰를 통해 알아보는 것에 목적을 두고 있다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대학 내 학생상담센터는 초, 중, 고등학교의 국가권력의 공적인 개입과 달리 자율적 성격을 띠고 있지만, 교육부의 평가, 학교 운영자들의 관심 여부, 학생상담센터의 관련자의 태도 등 권력이 재영토화되는 경향이 있다. 이에 학생상담센터의 본연의 기능으로 돌아감은 기관의 독립성 확보에 달려있다고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 학생상담센터와 관련된 모든 선택과 책임이 보호자와의 연대(면적인 접근)에서 전적으로 개인의 권리(점적인 접근)로 급작스럽게 전환됨으로 인해 통제와 관리에 있어 필연적인 틈새가 있는 것으로 밝혀져 적절한 보완책(특히, 내담자의 존엄성 확보)이 요구되는 것으로 사료된다. 셋째, 내담자에게 부여된 전적인 권리는 보호자 혹은 전문상담기관, 정신병원과 같은 공식의료기관 등 외부기관과의 느슨한 연계를 초래한다. 이에 효율적인 정신건강증진을 위해 내담자인 학생의 생활권(지역기반서비스)을 폭넓게 아우르는 공식의료와 비공식의료 사이의 긴밀한 연결 관계 구축이 필요하다고 할 수 있다.
