A Study of a Toponym ‘East Sea(Donghae)’ with the Case of Kyoto International High School Song and Place Name as Multi-layered Cultural Heritage

Abstract

This study investigates essential natures of cultural heritage with the case of the school song of Kyoto International High School in Japan, which begins with the toponym ‘Dong Hae (East Sea).’ Notably, the name ‘Dong Hae’ is used for the Japanese high school song even though ‘Dong Hae’ is barely accepted in Japan. This ironic instance can be comprehended through exploring how and why the place name ‘Dong Hae’ was adopted for the school song lyrics, which also illuminates place name’s sociocultural role and its functional implications as cultural heritage. This analytic process will also enable us to understand how the use and meaning of cultural heritage can change depending on spatiotemporal alterations. Place name as cultural heritage is a constantly changing existence corresponding with social and cultural requests. By understanding it, we can recognize the core nature of toponym and cultural heritage as an organic being interrelating with social structure and individual subjects. Deleuze's concept of rhizome provides a conceptual framework in the process of understanding the multiplicity of geographical names, socio-cultural construction, and the localization of external geographical names as cultural heritage.

본 연구는 ‘동해’ 지명으로 시작하는 일본 교토국제고등학교 교가 사례를 통해 지명이 가진 문화유산 속성을 규명하고 시공간적 맥락의 변화에 따라 문화유산의 활용과 의미가 어떻게 변화할 수 있는지를 분석한다. ‘동해’는 일본에서 거의 받아들여지지 않는 지명이지만 일본의 고등학교 교가에 수록되었다는 점에서 특기할만하다. 본 연구는 ‘동해’ 지명이 해당 고등학교 교가에 쓰이게 된 원인과 배경을 살펴봄으로써 지명이 가진 사회문화적 역할을 고찰하고 그것이 문화유산으로 기능하는 과정에 어떤 시사점을 가질 수 있는지를 이해하고자 한다. 문화유산으로서 지명은 그것을 활용하는 주체와 사회문화적 요구에 따라 끊임없이 변화하는 존재이며 이를 이해함으로써 사회구조 및 주체와 상호작용하는 사회적 구성물로서 지명의 본질을 인식할 수 있다. 들뢰즈의 리좀 개념은 문화유산으로서 지명의 중층성과 사회문화적 구성, 그리고 외부 지명의 토착화를 이해하는 과정에서 개념적 틀을 제공한다.
