A Theoretical Study on a ‘Relational Turn’ in Health Geographies: Rethinking Therapeutic Networks

Abstract

This study looks at a ‘relational turn’ in health geography and proposes the necessity for redefining the concept of ‘therapeutic networks,’ with a particular focus on networks as a prominent concept in the relational shift. The background of the relational shift in health geography stems not only from the influence of relational flows across geography as a whole but also from the predominance of relational elements in healing, the decline of unique historical therapeutic landscapes, and the diversification and complexity of therapeutic factors. Furthermore, this study reviews research exploring the relationship between networks and health, wellbing, and healing, revealing three branches: social networks, social support networks, and actor-network theory in the context of health, wellbeing, and healing. However, these existing studies have not yet converged on the conceptual framework of ‘therapeutic networks’. Moreover, existing studies on therapeutic networks have been limited by their focus on social networks and social support networks. Therefore, this study proposes to reconsider the concept of therapeutic networks as networks conducive to health, wellbeing, and healing, encompassing both humans and non-humans.

본 연구는 건강지리학에서 진행된 관계적 전환에 주목하고, 다양한 관계적 흐름의 중점이 되는 개념 중 하나인 네트워크를 중심으로 연구 갈래를 파악하여, 기존 치유적 네트워크 개념이 재정의될 필요성이 있음을 제안한다. 건강지리학에서 관계적 전환이 일어났던 배경은 지리학 전반에 걸친 관계적 흐름의 영향도 있었지만, 건강지리 자체에 있어서도 치유가 관계적 요소가 다분한 점, 고유의 역사성을 지니는 치유의 경관 쇠퇴, 치유 요인의 다양화와 복잡화가 있었다. 이와 같은 배경으로 빚어진 건강지리학 내 관계적 전환에서 그 중점이 되는 개념 중 하나인 네트워크를 초점으로 건강과의 연계를 탐구한 연구들을 살펴본 결과, 사회적 네트워크, 사회적 지지 네트워크, 행위자 네트워크 이론과 건강, 웰빙, 치유 사이의 관련성을 탐구하는 갈래들이 존재하였으나, 아직 그 연구들은 치유적 네트워크 개념으로 완전히 수렴되지 못한 상태였다. 또한, 기존 치유적 네트워크 연구들 역시 사회적 네트워크, 사회적 지지 네트워크 내에서 인간까지만 그 노드의 범주를 제한하는 한계점을 보였다. 그리하여, 본 연구는 인간 및 비인간 모두를 포함한 건강, 웰빙, 치유를 증진시킬 수 있는 네트워크로서 치유적 네트워크 개념이 재고되어야 함을 제시한다.
