The Negative Brand Value of Place Names: Conceptualizing Toponymic Stigma

Abstract

This study started out of interest in the practice of excluding geographic locations for the naming of infectious diseases, as exemplified by COVID-19. It focused on the possibility of damaging brand value of place names when they are associated with toxic facilities, dangerous incidents, or detrimental images. A hypothetical concept of the negative brand value of place names was investigated for its validity through the cases of place names adopted for diseases, avoided or given stigma effect for negative symbolism or meanings, and of negative images given to places. It is found that the negative identity of places is developed either gradually by a socio-economic situation or radically by accidental incidents, disasters or diseases. In this process, risk perception is involved and accelerated by way of risk communication. The place-based stigma produces stigmatized toponyms by damaging the brand value of place names. In contrast, the stigma effect that place names have received makes stigmatizing toponyms, which bring substantive losses to places. The toponymic stigma is proposed as a collective term which embraces these two concepts. It is regarded that the negative value of place names exists in interaction with the practices of toponymic stigma.

이 연구는 코로나바이러스감염증-19 명칭 부여에서 제기된 지명 배제의 원칙에 대한 관심에서 시작하였다. 지명이 유해한 시설, 나쁜 사건이나 사고, 또는 안 좋은 이미지와 연관될 때 브랜드 가치가 손상될 수 있음에 주목하고 이를 ‘지명의 역 브랜드 가치’라는 가설적 개념으로 설정하였다. 질병의 명칭에 지명이 사용된 사례, 장소의 부정적 이미지가 만들어지는 사례, 특정 지명을 회피하거나 장소와 지명을 통한 낙인 효과가 형성되는 사례 등을 통하여 이 개념의 가능성을 살펴보았다. 장소의 부정적 정체성은 사회경제적 상황에 의해 점진적으로, 또는 우연한 사고, 재해, 질병에 의해 급진적으로 형성되며, 위험지각에 의해 발전하고 여기에는 위험 커뮤니케이션이 작용한다. 장소 낙인은 지명 가치에 손상을 입혀 ‘낙인찍힌 지명’을 생산하며, 반대로 지명이 받은 낙인 효과는 장소에 실질적인 손실을 발생시키는 ‘낙인찍는 지명’을 만든다. 이 두 가지 과정을 총칭하는 개념으로 ‘지명 낙인’을 제안한다. 지명의 역 브랜드 가치는 지명 낙인이라는 형태와 상호작용하면서 존재한다.
