A Geographical Study on the Recovery of Dailiness in Therapeutic Spaces: From a Perspective of Zaona School for Adolescent Single Mothers

치유의 공간에서의 일상성 회복에 대한 지리학적 고찰 : 청소년 미혼모 시설 자오나 학교를 중심으로

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the matter as to how therapeutic spaces bring about the recovery of dailiness and which factors influence the restoration of everyday life. Zaono school as a case study of this research is the place where helps the recovery of dailiness such as studying, nurturing and being financially independent for out-of-school youths, particularly, adolescent single mothers. The results, which were conducted by semi-structured and in-depth interviews with eight participants of Zaona school, can be summarized as follows: 1) reestablishment via role models, 2) strict controls and 3) a threshold effect. First, the students of Zaona school experienced discrimination and exclusion in a society such as home, school, etc. and could not go through a proper process of maturing before entering Zaona school; but can recover their dailiness through various role models for them in the school. Second, Zaona school promotes the recovery of dailiness via strict controls. Even though the student of Zaona school, who had experienced the collapse of dailiness, regard strict controls as a hard dimension, these processes act on the opportunity that gives satisfaction and accomplishment to themselves. Third, the threshold effect, at which a level or point starts to happen or change, of Zaona school has the meaning of putting proper members of society into the world. Furthermore, it means not only setting authentic adults but also reinforcing the role of good mothers.

본 연구는 치유의 공간에서 어떻게 일상성 회복이 일어나는지, 그리고 일상성 회복에 어떤 요소가 영향을 미치는지 알아보는 것을 목적으로 하고 있으며, 이를 위해 학교 밖 청소년, 특히 미혼모 청소년을 위한 학습, 양육, 경제적 자립 등을 돕는 시설인 자오나 학교를 사례로 들고 있다. 자오나 학교의 관계자 8명을 대상으로 실시한 반구조화 및 심층 인터뷰와 참여관찰법을 토대로 한 연구의 결과는 1) 본보기를 통한 재정립, 2) 엄격한 통제, 3) 문턱 효과로 정리하였다. 먼저, 자오나 학교에 재학 중인 청소년들은 입소 전 대부분 가정, 학교 등 사회에서 차별과 배제를 겪으며 제대로 된 성숙의 과정을 거치기 어려웠으나, 여기에서는 다양한 본보기가 될 수 있는 롤모델을 통해 일상성을 회복하고 있다. 다음으로 자오나 학교는 엄격한 통제를 통해 일상성 회복을 돕는다. 긴 시간 일정한 규칙과 관리 없이 살아온 자오나 학교의 청소년들에게 자오나 학교의 삶은 쉽지 않은 것이기도 하지만, 이러한 과정은 결국 스스로에 대한 만족감과 성취감을 느낄 수 있는 계기로 작용하게 된다. 셋째, 자오나 학교는 일정한 수준에 이르러야 변화가 나타나는 일종의 문턱 효과를 내포하고 있지만, 이는 제대로 된 한명의 사회인을 세상에 내보낸다는 의미를 가지며, 더불어 진정한 어른으로서의 역할을 정립하는 일일 뿐만 아니라, 좋은 어머니로서의 역할을 튼튼히 하는 것이기도 하다.
