본 연구는 네트워크 커뮤니티 발견법을 활용한 지역구분방법을 기존 지역구분 방법들과 비교하여 커뮤니티 발견법을 활용한 기능지역 구분의 의미와 효용성을 탐구하는데 목적이 있다. 네트워크 커뮤니티 발견법은 기존의 기능지역 분석방법과 같이 중심과 주변을 구분하거나 임의적 기준에 따라 기능지역을 도출하지 않고 공간단위 간 합역 여부와 최종적인 기능지역의 개수도 모형에서 결정된다는 점에서 분석과정의 임의성을 배제할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 특히 기능지역 구분의 대표적 방법 중 하나인 지역노동시장권과 커뮤니티 발견법을 우리나라 시·군 단위를 대상으로 적용하여 비교 분석한 결과, 본 연구는 지역의 다중심성을 연구할 경우 커뮤니티 발견법이 해당 개념의 내용을 보다 적절하게 반영하는 방법론이라고 주장한다.
This study explores the meaning and usefulness of community detection method for delimitating functional regions by comparing with the existing methods for delineation of functional regions. The community detection method differs from the existing methods in that there is no assumption about arbitrary criterion and core-periphery structure. It is advantageous to identify functional regions without ex ante information. Comparing the functional regions identified by the local labor market method and the community detection method at a city and county scale, I argue that the community detection method has an advantage when examining the concepts of polycentric urban region or network city.
