Pluralism of Memories and Commemoration and the Accumulation of Placeness Contained in Place Names: The Case of Volgograd/Stalingrad

Abstract

This study aims to understand the pluralism of memories and commemoration and the subsequent accumulation of placeness contained in place names from the perspective of critical toponymy. Volgograd in the Russian Federation, which was called as Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961, was chosen as the case of study. Four elements have been set up for the analysis; parallel symbolism connoted in the name Stalingrad, namely the great leader Stalin and the triumphant patriotic Stalingrad Battle; contrasting memories crossing the trauma and the victory; two different objects of commemoration by one name; and placeness accumulated through each memory and commemoration. It is found that the differentiated perspectives and perception on the name Stalingrad, added by the placeness of Volgograd resulting from its sixty-year history of use, have been developing into the discourses of supporting and opposing to the renaming back to Stalingrad. The positions and political backgrounds that each of the political or social groups in Russia has on this renaming should be further investigated.

이 연구에서는 러시아 볼고그라드(스탈린그라드)를 사례로 하여, 지명에 담긴 기억과 기념의 다원적 특성이 전개되는 양상과 이에 따라 축적되는 장소성의 인식을 비판지명학의 관점에서 이해하고자 한다. 위대한 지도자 스탈린과 승리한 애국전쟁 스탈린그라드전투의 기억을 동시에 함축하고 있는 스탈린그라드 명칭에 담긴 상징성, 트라우마와 승리가 교차하는 기억의 양면성, 하나의 지명에 담긴 두 가지 기념 대상, 그리고 각 기억과 기념으로 인한 장소성의 축적이 그 분석의 대상이다. 스탈린그라드에 대한 차별화된 시각은 지난 60년간 사용된 볼고그라드의 장소성이 더해져 개칭에 대한 찬성과 반대의 담론으로 발전하고 있음이 발견된다. 러시아 사회를 구성하는 각 정치, 사회 집단이 이 문제에 대해 갖는 입장과 그 정치적 배경에 대한 상세한 분석은 추후 연구과제로 제안된다.
