Chinese Segregation in Linguistic Landscapes: A Case Study of Seoul

Abstract

Linguistic landscape refers to a visual impression of the languages used in public signs and advertisements in a particular area. As it reflects the population composition and the socio-cultural status among language groups in the society, the linguistic landscape of Seoul has been dominated by Korean and English in most places. However, other languages, such as Chinese, also appears in certain parts of the city, where the foreign population is concentrated, and their proportions are increasing in recent years. In this work, we examine the levels of segregation between the Chinese language and other languages in Seoul's linguistic landscape. Over 10 thousand street-level images were collected and analyzed, and it was found that the levels of the linguistic isolation have decreased over the years between 2008 and 2018. This result implies that the overall degree of segregation between Chinese and non-Chinese people has also moderated, not only in residential neighborhoods but also in their daily activity spaces.

언어경관은 특정 장소의 공공 표지판, 간판 등에 쓰인 언어가 주는 시각적 인상으로, 해당 지역의 인구 구성 및 각 언어 집단 간 사회문화적 지위를 반영한다. 서울은 대부분의 장소에서 한국어와 영어가 지배적인 언어경관이 나타나지만, 상대적으로 외국인이 밀집한 일부 지역에서는 중국어를 비롯한 다른 언어의 비중도 비교적 높게 나타난다. 본 연구에서는 서울 여러 지역의 언어경관을 수집하여 정량적으로 기록하고, 언어경관에 나타난 중국어 비율이 연도별, 지역별로 어떻게 다른지 살펴봄으로써 서울시 중국어 사용 인구의 공간적 분리 수준을 간접적으로 살펴보고자 한다. 지금까지 조선족을 비롯한 중국 국적인의 공간적 분리에 관한 연구는 대부분 거주지 중심으로 이루어져 왔다는 점에서 다소 한계가 있었다. 언어경관의 변화는 거주지뿐만 아니라, 이들이 일상적으로 방문하고 활동하는 상업 공간에서도 나타나기 때문에 공간적 분리를 다각도로 살펴보는 데 보다 유용할 수 있다. 분석 결과, 본 연구에서는 서울에서 중국어 사용 인구의 공간적 분리가 지속적으로 감소했음을 확인했으며, 이는 언어경관에 반영된 지리적 현상을 실증적으로 연구한 사례로 학문적 의미가 있다.
